About the museum

The Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa is one of the oldest museums in the Veneto and, since 1828, has been the artistic and cultural heart of the city. It is housed in the former convent complex of San Francesco, one of the most recognisable places in Bassano, next to the church of the same name.

Over the centuries the collections have grown thanks to donations, bequests and acquisitions, and now include thousands of historical, artistic and documentary items ranging from prehistory to the Renaissance, from realist painting to the experiments of contemporary masters.

Among the most important groups is the collection of Jacopo Bassano and his sons, a family of painters at the heart of the Venetian Renaissance, the largest and most important in the world. Another group is devoted to Antonio Canova, with statues, paintings, drawings, books and letters documenting his creative process. The museum also holds works by Guariento, Lorenzo Lotto, Artemisia Gentileschi, Giambattista Tiepolo, Alessandro Magnasco and Francesco Hayez, a rich archaeological collection including the Chini collection, the section on the history of the city and an important collection of drawings and prints.
