About the museum
Villa Emo stands at Fanzolo, in the municipality of Vedelago, in the province of Treviso, and is one of Andrea Palladio’s most accomplished villas. It was probably begun from 1558 for Leonardo Emo, a member of a Venetian patrician family who owned it until 2004. For the building Palladio used the same mathematical proportions that characterise the rest of his work, in its height and in the size of the rooms.
The villa is flanked by two long colonnaded barchesse, which housed the farming activities, following a model of productive farm similar to that of Villa Badoer; at their ends are two dovecotes. Access is along a long paved avenue of large squared stones. The exteriors are essential, without decoration, while the interiors are rich in frescoes, dated 1565, by Giovanni Battista Zelotti. In the central hall he painted episodes of Roman history and, in the false niches, deities symbolising the elements, together with “prigioni” (prisoners) that recall the military deeds of the Emo family.
Since 1996 the villa has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage together with the other Palladian villas of the Veneto and the city of Vicenza. The complex also includes a park with statues and an agricultural park with vineyards, visitable by booking. The villa is currently undergoing a major restoration.
