About the museum
The house in Ghilarza is the home where the Gramsci family lived and where the future thinker spent his childhood and youth. In 1965 the building was bought by the Partito Comunista Italiano (Italian Communist Party), which began a first restoration to turn it into a meeting place and a venue for debate on Gramscian thought, the Sardinian question and the labour movement. In 1967, thirty years after Gramsci's death, the house was opened to the public as a documentation and research centre.
The museum display and exhibition route, curated by the architect Cesare Boeri and the scholar Elena Fubini, were inaugurated on 27 April 1975. Management later passed to local associations and, from 2016, to the Fondazione Casa Museo Antonio Gramsci di Ghilarza Onlus, founded by the Fondazione Berlinguer, the Gramsci-Paulesu family, the Fondazione Gramsci of Rome and the Municipality of Ghilarza.
Since May 2023 the house has been closed for a major renovation within the project “Da Ghilarza al mondo: il Polo museale Antonio Gramsci” (From Ghilarza to the World: the Antonio Gramsci Museum Complex), designed by the Studio Lerua of Sassari. The complex includes the historic house and two adjoining buildings, among them the former PCI headquarters in Ghilarza, which have been renovated and linked together. The museum reopened between September and October 2025 with a new two-floor route, rich in images, objects, documents, audio content and virtual reconstructions.
