About the museum

Nuraghe Losa stands on the Abbasanta plateau, amid Mediterranean scrub, a short distance from the state road 131 between km 123 and km 124. It is a giant of black basalt, unique for its sinuous concave-convex profile, and was built in the Middle Bronze Age, when Nuragic civilisation was at its height. Its original name has been lost: “Losa”, meaning tomb in Sardinian, derives from the nearby cremation necropolis of the Roman imperial period.

It is a tholos nuraghe of complex type, with a trilobed plan. Beyond the high entrance threshold a corridor leads to the side chambers and the central chamber, with a pointed (ogival) vault; a helical staircase built into the thickness of the wall climbs to what remains of the upper floor, now thirteen metres high and originally about twenty. A second entrance to the north-west leads to the rear tower. On the outside a long stretch of the towered outer wall survives, together with a water cistern.

In front of the main entrance the assembly hut is well preserved, where ceremonies of worship were also held. At the foot of the nuraghe stood a village of huts covering three and a half hectares, still largely unexcavated and protected by a massive wall that has survived along its full length. The village was reused over time, until the early Middle Ages. The park also includes visitor facilities and offers guided tours and educational workshops; the same operator runs the META – Museo Etnografico di Abbasanta.
