About the museum

The Tamuli archaeological complex lies near Mount Sant’Antonio, in the territory of Macomer, in the historical region of Marghine in central-northern Sardinia. The site offers visitors the chance to learn in one place about the “places of life” and the “places of death” of Nuragic civilisation in the Middle and Late Bronze Age (16th–13th centuries BC), and covers more than two hectares.

The nuraghe, a complex corridor-type building on a basalt outcrop, has a central tower with a lintelled entrance facing south-east and an added body with two further towers. Around it extend the remains of a village that has never been excavated, apart from brief trial trenches of the 1970s: at least 15 circular Nuragic huts, alongside later elongated huts used by shepherds as shelters for animals. About three hundred metres away are three giants’ tombs with an exedra and bench-seat, built in courses of squared and smoothed blocks.

The best preserved, tomb A, is also called the tomba dei betili (betyl tomb): on its left side six conical betyls (pedras marmuradas) are aligned, three smooth and three larger ones with two breast-shaped reliefs, which symbolically represent the male and the female deity. The visit is accompanied by panels, tactile reproductions of pottery in the teaching room, and 3D reconstructions of the tombs and rituals with virtual reality headsets.
