About the museum
Carmelo Cammarata was born in Bivona on 17 April 1924 and lived and worked there all his life. Of humble origins, he worked as a farmer and devoted himself to art in his spare time: first painting, then sculpture in plaster, marble, alabaster and wood. Self-taught, he reached full artistic maturity at the end of the 1960s and frequented the cultural centre “Il Pegaso” in Bivona, where writers and artists came and went. He died on 27 March 1999.
The Casa museo, inaugurated in 2006 at Via Sirretta 58, is his birthplace: an early 20th-century farmhouse, furnished simply with period furniture, which shows the artist's rural roots and his first works. The permanent exhibition of the sculptures is at Via Avicario 2.
The museum is run by the Istituzione Culturale Carmelo Cammarata, set up on the initiative of the sculptor's children. In 2024 the Municipality dedicated a street to the artist to mark the centenary of his birth.
