About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Panitteri, in the historic centre of Sambuca di Sicilia, and was opened in 2013 to house the finds from the archaeological area of Monte Adranone, the ancient city that arose between the 8th and 3rd centuries BC on the border between Sican and Elymian-Punic influence. The museum is managed by the Parco archeologico e paesaggistico della Valle dei Templi.
The palazzo is a 17th-century building that belonged to important local families; it was built as a tower to defend the ancient walls of the citadel of Zabut. It has a quadrangular plan with an inner courtyard decorated with Mediterranean plants, spreads over two levels, and the piano nobile (main floor) is reached by a Catalan staircase.
The exhibition route covers the indigenous phase, the Greek city, the Punic reconstruction and the Roman siege of Adranon, which stood along the “Selinuntia odòs”, the road between Selinunte and Akragas. The emblem of the museum is the statue of Demeter “of the Beautiful Hair”; the materials include bronze belts, strigils, household objects, Attic and Punic-tradition vases, Doric and Ionic columns and capitals, as well as the grave goods from the tombs of the necropolis, such as that of tomb CLXX from the mid-5th century BC.
