About the museum
Monte Adranone, the ancient Adranon, stands at about 900 metres above sea level in the Sicani Mountains, about 7 km from the centre of Sambuca di Sicilia. In the 6th century BC the city was colonised from Selinunte and became a link with Akragas; in the Hellenistic period, after the Carthaginian conquest, it was a defensive point of the Carthaginian system, until its destruction by the Romans around 250 BC.
Of the settlement the city walls can be recognised, about 6 km long and in some stretches preserved to a height of about 6 metres, with small towers and the remains of the North Gate (Porta Nord). Inside the acropolis, reached through a gate between two square towers, stood a rectangular Punic temple beside a large cistern cut into the marl; to the south lies an extra-urban sanctuary. Of the settlement, rooms are preserved arranged around a central courtyard.
The necropolis includes cist tombs and hypogeal chamber tombs; the so-called Tomba della Regina (Queen’s Tomb), discovered in 1885, dates from the 6th–5th century BC. The finds from the excavations are kept in the Museo archeologico di Palazzo Panitteri in Sambuca di Sicilia. The site lies within the Monte Genuardo nature reserve and offers a 360-degree view over the Sicani Mountains.
