About the museum
Palazzo Taglieschi was created by joining three medieval tower-houses in the centre of Anghiari and became a Renaissance residence belonging to an important family of knights. Its halls, courtyards and towers still have the look of a noble house and show how people lived in town between the 15th and 16th centuries.
The museum was founded on the initiative of Don Nilo Conti, a local scholar, and inaugurated on 6 September 1975. Its aim was to gather works of art from the churches and historic buildings of the Alta Valle del Tevere and objects linked to the religious, agricultural and craft traditions of the area.
The collections include ancient and medieval stone sculpture, detached frescoes, Della Robbia ceramics, wooden statues from the 13th to the 16th century, Renaissance crucifixes and a small picture gallery, to which the works of the local painter Fausto Vagnetti have recently been added. The route also includes the “Madonne agghindate” (dressed Madonnas), ex-votos, liturgical furnishings, Anghiari ceramics, tools of popular culture and a rare 16th-century portable organ. The museum is now managed by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali della Toscana (Regional Directorate of Tuscany’s National Museums).
