About the museum
Excavations at Celano-Paludi began in 1984 with the discovery of wooden and ceramic materials, which led to the discovery of a lake-dwelling village on the shores of the ancient Lake Fucino, dating to about 3,600–3,700 years ago and at its peak in the 12th century BC. The museum was built a few years after the discovery.
The building, largely underground and designed by Ettore De Lellis and Pierluigi Natalucci, recalls in its form the tumulus tombs of the protohistoric period that were widespread in the Marsica. It covers about 5,000 square metres and adjoins an artificial marsh that partly recreates scenes of life in the lake village; in one of the ponds the remains of large oak piles and of the necropolis can be seen, with six tumulus burials. A walkway allows the external spaces to be observed from above.
The collections range from the Bronze Age to the Roman period, and the permanent exhibition covers a span from the Palaeolithic to the 1st century BC, with multimedia sections on climate and anthropological change. Besides spaces for temporary exhibitions and a conference hall, the museum houses restoration workshops and storerooms with artworks from the municipalities of the Abruzzo earthquake area damaged by the 2009 earthquake. Since 2014 it has been managed by the Ministry of Culture, today through the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Abruzzo.
