About the museum

The Museo civico archeologico di Collelongo is housed in the historic centre, in the former Palazzo Botticelli, now a multicultural centre that also hosts the library and an open-air theatre. It holds materials from the research carried out in the municipal territory, where traces going back to the Neolithic have been identified.

The most important evidence comes from ancient Amplero, a fortified town with cyclopean walls, an acropolis and two vici, to which the necropoleis of Cantone and San Castro belonged. The finds on display, dating between the 6th century BC and the 1st century AD, come from temples, cisterns and tombs with rich grave goods.

The most significant piece is the bone funerary bed from the Cantone necropolis. The original is kept at the National Museum of Chieti, while a copy is displayed in Palazzo Botticelli. The museum also offers a digital visit route, with a virtual tour, a web map of the territory and an online catalogue.
