About the museum
The collection was founded in Montemesola in 1990 and in 2015 moved to Lecce, to the first floor of the former Fratelli Gidiuli shoe factory in Palazzo Prete. It is a private, lived-in home, not the residence of a historical figure, and visitors are welcomed personally by the owners.
It displays more than a thousand instruments made between the 16th and 20th centuries, arranged in nine rooms: liturgical and ritual music, band music, orchestral woodwinds, children’s music, keyboard instruments, string instruments, world music, folk music and mechanical music. Each instrument is presented as an object that tells its own story, of the time and the places in which it was made and used.
The house also keeps a library of about two hundred books, with paintings, scores and manuscripts by authors mainly from southern Italy.
