About the museum
The museum occupies a historic building in the old town of Lecce, owned by the Faggiano family. It was founded in 2001, when owner Luciano Faggiano, who had to break up the floors to replace old sewer pipes that were causing damp on the walls, uncovered historic and archaeological remains.
The route leads through rock-cut structures from different periods, starting with the Messapian era: tombs, including that of a child and a collective tomb, cisterns, granaries, a drying room and a stretch of underground road that once linked the building to other places. Numerous ceramic finds are also on display.
A large part of the visit is devoted to the dioramas of the Grotta dei Cervi di Otranto, described as the “Sistine Chapel of Palaeontology”. The museum is maintained by the cultural association Idume, which receives the proceeds from ticket sales.
