About the museum
The Museo del Teatro Romano is located in the historic centre of Lecce, in Via degli Ammirati, next to the Roman theatre from which it takes its name. The theatre was discovered by chance in 1929, during work in the gardens of two old palazzi. Its date is not certain, but it is generally attributed to the Augustan age, between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, and it is thought to have been commissioned by the Emperor Augustus together with the nearby amphitheatre.
The cavea, cut into the rock and faced with opus quadratum, has an external diameter of about 40 metres and is divided into six sectors by radial staircases. The orchestra is paved with slabs of white limestone, and the stage is about 30 metres wide. The theatre is estimated to have held more than 5,000 spectators. Some terracotta fragments date from the Augustan age, while the marble statues are attributed to the Antonine age.
The finds from the excavation are kept in the adjoining museum, which allows visitors to explore the history of the theatre and of the Roman city of Lupiae in greater depth.
