About the museum

The house at Pontorme, a hamlet of Empoli, is the birthplace of Jacopo Carucci, known as Pontormo (1494–1556), a Mannerist painter whom Giorgio Vasari linked to the “maniera moderna” (modern manner). The building was recognised as the artist's birthplace by the scholar Ugo Procacci in 1956 and was bought by the Municipality of Empoli at the end of 1995. It is a three-storey medieval building, restored and turned into a museum.

The display includes a multimedia installation on the artist's life and work, facsimiles of the preparatory drawings for the altarpiece of the nearby church of San Michele, a facsimile edition of the painter's “Diario” (Diary), an ancient replica of the “Madonna del libro” (Madonna of the Book), and the archaeological finds that emerged during the excavations for the restoration.

The house also hosts the Centro internazionale di studi sull'arte del Cinquecento in Toscana (International Centre for the Study of 16th-century Art in Tuscany) and the educational heritage section of the municipal museums, which organises workshops, lectures and seminars.
