About the museum

The Gabinetto di Fisica is regarded as the oldest scientific institution of the University of Urbino and is housed in the 18th-century Palazzo degli Scolopi, today the Collegio Raffaello. The museum was officially established in 1988 and occupies a large room dedicated to Alessandro Serpieri (1823–1885), who directed the Gabinetto from 1847 to 1884.

The collection of historic scientific instruments is one of the most important among Italian university collections and reflects the scientific tradition of the city. One section is devoted to the origins of science at the court of Urbino and presents a virtual reconstruction of the Studiolo of Duke Federico da Montefeltro.

The museum is part of the Sistema museale di Ateneo (university museum system) of the Università di Urbino Carlo Bo and takes part in extraordinary opening events, such as the Giornate FAI (FAI Heritage Days).
