About the museum
The castle dominates the historic centre of Castell'Alfero, within a walled enclosure with two ancient gates. The “castrum Alferii”, already mentioned in the Codex Astensis, passed under the rule of Asti between 1159 and 1189; the village was sacked in 1616 during the wars over the succession to Monferrato.
After the Treaty of Utrecht, around 1730, under the lordship of the Counts Amico, feudal vassals of the House of Savoy, the building was profoundly transformed into a noble residence to a design by the royal architect Benedetto Alfieri. The rich painted decoration of the interiors is the work of Gerolamo Mengozzi, a collaborator of Giambattista Tiepolo. Today the building is more a large palace than a fortress, but it preserves the massive walls of the original fortification.
The castle houses the Museo etnografico 'L Ciar. Visits, usually guided and by booking, include the decorated rooms of the palace and the museum; the castle also takes part in the Castelli Aperti initiative.
