About the museum

Castello Manservisi overlooks the valley from Castelluccio, a small village in the municipality of Alto Reno Terme. The complex belonged to the noble Nanni-Levera family. In 1886 Alessandro Manservisi bought it together with some partners and renovated it in the taste of the time, turning it into a neo-Gothic castle with towers, arcades, pointed arches and refined wrought-iron elements, such as grilles, lamps, brackets and rings for tethering horses, made by skilled stonemasons and blacksmiths.

The castle remained in the family until 1912, when it was handed over to charity for the benefit of poor children. In the following years, until around the late 1970s, parts of it were used as a holiday colony and a hotel. The director Pupi Avati chose it as the setting for the film “Una gita scolastica” (1983).

Among the rooms open to visitors, the Sala degli arazzi (Tapestry Room) stands out, where canvases restored by the Bolognese painter Giacomo Lolli are displayed; they were painted in a technique that imitates the effect of a tapestry and depict scenes of everyday family life of the Manservisi. The castle also has rooms furnished with period furniture and spaces for art exhibitions. In the former hotel, part of the complex, the ethnographic museum LabOrantes is housed; it is dedicated to the daily life, work and religious practice of mountain communities between the 19th and 20th centuries.
