About the museum
MuGot began as the Documentation and Historical Research Centre of Gotica Toscana, opened on 24 September 2011 at Ponzalla, a small village below the Passo del Giogo, in the municipality of Scarperia e San Piero. It is run by the social promotion association Gotica Toscana, which also has its office on the same site, as well as the secretariat of HMV Italy, the network of collectors of historic military vehicles.
The museum tells the story of the Second World War in Tuscany and in particular the fighting of September 1944 at the Passo del Giogo, along the Gothic Line in the Apennines north of Florence. The route combines documents, oral testimonies, period films and objects from local collections and donations, including weapons and other material recently received.
The exhibition covers about 350 square metres and includes more than 2,500 finds, three dioramas, fifteen mannequins and six environmental reconstructions. Alongside the museum visit, the association organises guided tours of the battle sites, historical excursions and re-enactment events.
