About the museum
The Musei di Sant’Agata, in Mugello, comprise two sites close to the pieve of Sant’Agata, one of the most important Romanesque monuments of the area. The Raccolta di arte sacra “Don Corrado Paoli” is housed in the oratory of the Compagnia di San Iacopo, a building from the early 16th century on the left side of the churchyard. It was created to protect and enhance works from deconsecrated churches and from tabernacles in the area, and it completes the visit to the pieve.
Among the paintings, terracottas, liturgical furnishings and ex-votos on display are “Matrimonio mistico di Santa Caterina” by Bicci di Lorenzo (1430), a panel by the Maestro di Signa, one by the school of Rodolfo del Ghirlandaio, glazed terracottas by Andrea della Robbia and a polychrome terracotta by Giovanni della Robbia. Educational panels explain their connection with the area of origin.
The Centro di Documentazione Archeologica is located in an old wine-vat room and the rustic rooms attached to the rectory of the pieve, and tells the story of Mugello from prehistory to the Middle Ages, with worked flints, pottery, coins and medieval metal finds, and with reconstructions of tools that visitors can touch. A recently fitted room permanently houses the finds from the so-called tomb of the “Principe”, discovered in 2012 in the municipality of Scarperia e San Piero, which documents an Etruscan rural aristocracy some 3,000 years ago. In an adjacent field a life-size prehistoric village can be visited, with three furnished huts, from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age.
