About the museum
The museum is in the multipurpose centre of Sant’Agata, a village in the municipality of Scarperia e San Piero, and has been officially open since 1986. It holds the animated scenes built by Falerio Lepri, known as Leprino, who after the war began making miniatures as a hobby and displayed them during festivals in the window of his grocery shop.
Lepri recreated the village of his childhood, Sant’Agata nel Mugello, as it was in the 1920s, with scenes of everyday life and traditional trades up to the 1950s. The figures, about 70 centimetres tall, have a wooden frame with small salvaged motors, are covered in papier-mâché and dressed in period clothing; the buildings are made of cardboard and the tools of wood or aluminium. A network of electric wires synchronises the movements of the characters.
The museum aims to preserve the sense of rural tradition, a way of life at risk of being forgotten, and is suitable for both children and adults. For schools there is a guided route of about one hour, ending with a film in which Leprino explains how his characters came to be.
