About the museum
The “S Haus van der Zahre” ethnographic centre (“the house of Sauris”) is housed in a 19th-century rural building, a former cowshed with a stone and timber hayloft attached, typical of Alpine architecture. It documents the culture of the German-speaking community of Sauris-Zahre, whose origins go back to the mid-13th century.
The collection includes work tools and handmade objects donated by families from the village. The centre sees itself as a place of research and encounter, where the community takes part through oral testimony, loans of objects and collaboration on exhibitions and publications.
As well as the collection, the centre hosts temporary themed exhibitions on subjects such as carnival, traditional trades, clothing, alpine pasturing and hay-making, popular devotion and ancient trade routes. It is part of the CarniaMusei network; a visit takes about one hour.
