About the museum
The church of San Sebastiano stands inside the castle of Valfabbrica and originated as a medieval castle chapel, later converted into an oratory. In the 16th century the building was remodelled to house the confraternities of the Santissimo Sacramento and della Buona Morte (Holy Sacrament and Good Death), which made it their seat.
Later the church was enlarged and divided into three naves. In the 18th century it was enriched with five Baroque altars, which still characterise the interior. Since 2023 the building has housed a civic museum: the display is designed to showcase the church’s own decorative furnishings and holds civil and ecclesiastical objects and documents linked to the history and culture of the area.
On the high altar stands a 17th-century Crucifix. The altar of the Madonna of the Rosary houses an early 20th-century panel by an unknown artist, inspired by the central part of Pinturicchio’s Pala di Santa Maria dei Fossi, today kept in the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria. On the altar opposite is a Holy Family by the Perugian painter Benedetto Bandiera, close to Federico Barocci.
