About the museum

The Civico Museo Archeologico di Casteggio e dell'Oltrepò Pavese was founded in 1974 by the municipal administration together with a group of local enthusiasts. The Lombardy Archaeological Heritage Authority (Soprintendenza) entrusted it with finds from the excavations in Casteggio and the Oltrepò Pavese, which document the area from the Neolithic to the Renaissance.

The museum is housed in the Palazzo Certosa Cantù, a building erected from the late 17th century by the monks of the Certosa di Pavia as a hospice and agricultural estate for wine production; the keystone above the portal bears the date 1705. The palace takes its name from its last owner, Professor Luigi Cantù. Today it also houses the civic library and the city's cultural activities.

The displays occupy two floors. On the first floor, sections follow one another on palaeontology, prehistory and protohistory, the Roman period, Late Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and collecting. On the ground floor are the dolium room and the section on inscriptions and burials, with reconstructed Roman brick tombs. The history of ancient Clastidium holds a special place: its remains were recovered as early as 1888 by the lawyer and mayor Carlo Giulietti. One room is dedicated to the explorer Giuseppe Maria Giulietti, another to the works donated to the city by the artist Giovanni Civardi.
