About the museum

The Titta Ruffo Collection gathers the stage costumes and memorabilia of the Pisan baritone Titta Ruffo (Pisa 1877 – Florence 1954). His heirs donated the material to the city of Pisa for the Museo teatrale (theatre museum), opened in November 1960; in January 1961 eight crates of costumes and scores arrived, and in 1963 the singer Gino Bechi donated two more costumes, those of Rigoletto and of Rodrigo in Don Carlos.

The museum was dismantled in the 1980s, when the theatre closed for restoration. After recovery and inventory in the 1990s, the collection was placed between the first and second tiers of boxes of the Teatro Verdi, where the Ente del Teatro has carried out restoration, study and cataloguing of the materials since 1999. For conservation reasons the display rotates roughly every two years: about sixteen of the forty-three costumes are on show.

Among the most interesting pieces are stage props and costumes for roles such as Boris Godunov, Rigoletto, Ernani, Don Carlos and Scarpia, together with accessories, stage weapons, wigs, caricatures, photographs, scores, books and autographs of great composers, including Puccini. The foundation that runs the theatre offers guided tours of the theatre and the collection.
