About the museum

The open-air museum of Luicciana, a hamlet of Cantagallo in the upper Bisenzio valley, dates from the early 1980s. In 1983 the Ce.Pa.C. of Prato, the local information office and the Comune di Cantagallo began a series of group exhibitions, inviting artists to paint or sculpt façades and public spaces, to give the village a new identity after the damage of the Second World War. The museum was inaugurated in 1984.

The original nucleus consists of three frescoes on plaster mixed with marble dust, set in aedicules imitating windows, on the façade of the Misericordia. Over time some forty works by painters, sculptors, graphic artists and ceramicists were added, among them representatives of the Florentine avant-garde such as Vinicio Berti, Silvio Loffredo and Gualtiero Nativi, and artists such as Burattin, Fertonani and Leonetto Tintori. In the late 1990s installations by Maurizio Faggi, Vittorio Corsini and Tom Claassen were added and, in 2008, environmental works by Giuliano Mauri.

The works are spread along the streets, small squares, gardens and house façades of the village; part of the collection is kept in the Palazzo Comunale. The museum is part of the wider contemporary art complex of Cantagallo, which also includes a public art circuit and an environmental art circuit.
