About the museum

The museum is located in the abbey of San Salvatore in Vaiano, founded on the right bank of the Bisenzio river by Benedictine monks between the 9th and 10th centuries and later passed to the Vallombrosians. The monastery had great influence over the area, managing hospitals, waters, roads, agriculture and woodland, until it was suppressed in 1808 and the church became a parish church.

Since 1992 a small museum of sacred art has been housed in the former monastic complex, with finds from the excavation and study campaigns carried out in the monastery. In 2024, after restoration, the museum reopened with a new display. The route unfolds in the rooms of the former refectory and of the abbot’s apartment and is named after Agnolo Firenzuola, a humanist writer who was briefly abbot of Vaiano.

Archaeological finds and works of sacred art tell the story of the monastery and the area. Thematic rooms illustrate the dietary habits and daily life of the monks and the ceremonies of the monastic liturgy. One part is dedicated to the Compagnie e Congreghe (lay confraternities), and one section houses furnishings and paintings from the pieve (parish church) of Sofignano and from the church of Savignano.
