About the museum
The parish church of San Cassiano, in the village of Controne in Bagni di Lucca, dates back to the 10th century and was enlarged in the 12th. The bell tower, with Ghibelline crenellations, is partly older than the church, while the apse was added in the 17th century. The façade has a double row of blind arcades and a portal decorated with animal figures and geometric motifs; the three-aisled interior preserves an Agati-Tronci organ from 1897 and a timber-truss ceiling.
The complex includes a museum that houses the equestrian statue known as the “Cavaliere di San Cassiano”, which restorers have recognised as an early work by Jacopo della Quercia. The parish also has an exhibition room with a Saint Martin on horseback by the same sculptor.
