About the museum
The monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno stands in Molise, on the banks of the River Volturno, in the territory of the municipalities of Castel San Vincenzo and Rocchetta a Volturno. According to medieval sources, a church dedicated to Saint Vincent of Zaragoza already existed on the site in late antiquity. In the 8th century three nobles from Benevento, Paldo, Taso and Tato, founded a monastic community there; the history of the abbey is known above all thanks to the Chronicon Vulturnense, an illuminated codex compiled around 1130 and now kept in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana.
In 787 the abbey obtained extensive privileges from Charlemagne and became one of the most powerful monastic centres in Europe. In the 9th century, under the abbots Giosuè, Talarico and Epifanio, the complex reached the size of a true monastic city, with ten churches, vast landholdings and around 350 monks. The earthquake of 848, the tribute imposed by the emir of Bari in 860 and the attack of 881 marked the beginning of the decline; later monastic life moved to the other bank of the river, to the new abbey.
Today the ruins of the early medieval monastic city form an archaeological park, brought to light by decades of excavation. The visit route crosses the river over the so-called “ponte della Zingara” and leads to the San Vincenzo Minore sector, where there are courtyards, kitchens, a refectory and a laundry and, beneath the presbytery of a church, the Crypt of Epifanio, built between 824 and 842 and preserved with its fresco cycle. Further up you reach the great basilica of San Vincenzo Maggiore, consecrated in 808, with the ring-shaped crypt known as Giosuè, and the remains of the chapel of Santa Restituta.
