About the museum
The permanent exhibition was opened on 14 December 1991 by the cultural association Circolo della Zampogna, at its headquarters in Scapoli, at the foot of the Mainarde mountains in Molise. It was the first exhibition of its kind in Italy and was set up to create, in the small village, a centre for documenting and promoting the zampogna, a bagpipe with a bag linked to the musical and craft traditions of central and southern Italy, and to attract visitors to the area of the Parco nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise.
The initial core consisted of about twenty instruments from the collection of the scholar Mauro Gioielli; over time the collection grew to around 120 pieces, partly made available by the national park and partly donated by members and supporters or bought by the association. Alongside the zampogne and cornamuse, the exhibition includes instruments linked to their use in the places of origin, such as flutes, folk oboes and percussion.
The exhibition is organised in two sections: one dedicated to the zampogne of Molise and other Italian bagpipes with a bag, the other to European and non-European bagpipes. Since 2010 it has occupied the association's headquarters and hosts the Centro Italiano della Zampogna, with documentation, a database and iconographic and literary materials. It should not be confused with the Museo internazionale della zampogna, a municipal institution opened in 2002, also in Scapoli.
