About the museum
The Domschatzkammer of Bolzano is housed in the former provostry, a building whose origins date back to 1275, in the old town next to the Cathedral of the Assumption, the first Gothic hall church in the history of architecture. The sacred art museum holds one of the largest Baroque ecclesiastical collections in Tyrol.
The display extends over about 220 square metres in four rooms, with a minimalist layout that uses steel elements in contrast with the Baroque pieces. The first room is devoted to the history of the parish and the Cathedral, in relation to the role of Bolzano as a trading city of international renown; the second illustrates the culture of processions and the veneration of devotional images, with a remarkable collection of relics.
The third room presents goldwork and silverwork, including pieces by masters from Augsburg; the fourth recalls the elevation of the parish to a provostry in the 18th century. About one hundred objects are on display: monstrances, liturgical vestments, processional banners, a large gilded silver monstrance 136 cm high and weighing 13 kg, a historic Lenten crib and parchment scrolls of the 14th century from Avignon.
