About the museum
The Palazzo Mercantile in Bolzano, designed by Francesco Perotti in the 18th century, was the seat of the Magistrato mercantile, a commercial court established in 1635 by Archduchess Claudia de’ Medici to settle disputes among the merchants of the Bolzano fairs. In the mid-19th century the property and duties of the Magistrato passed to the newly founded Chamber of Commerce, which restored the building. The museum opened to the public in 1997.
On the first floor are the original furnishings and documents, an art collection and objects of applied art, presented together with the economic history of the city. The second floor houses part of the commercial archive of the firm G. A. Menz, an important family business in Bolzano between the 18th and 19th centuries. On the basement level three medieval cellars, recently restored, can be visited; they show Bolzano in the 13th and 14th centuries.
