About the museum
The museum association was founded in 1882, and the Museo Civico di Bolzano opened its doors in 1905 in the building on Via Cassa di Risparmio, built between 1902 and 1904 at the beginning of the pedestrian zone of the historic centre. The building incorporates the foundations of the medieval Hurlach-Residenz. In 2003 the museum closed for renovation work, made necessary by the unsuitable climatic conditions of the storerooms, and after eight years it reopened with about two hundred works on display in six rooms and in the tower, which offers a panoramic view of the city.
The collections include stucco works, wooden altarpieces and sculptures, oil paintings, goldsmith's work, stoves and stove tiles, traditional costumes and graphic art, with pieces ranging from Romanesque Madonnas to Gothic Stube (wood-panelled rooms). The museum also has a specialist library with more than 30,000 volumes and periodicals on art history, archaeology and history, which can be searched through the online catalogue of the Biblioteca civica di Bolzano.
