About the museum
The Ecomuseo del Cossatese e delle Baragge is a “dispersed” museum in the landscape and the territory: it has as many open-air rooms as there are exemplary aspects of the history of the environment and the local community, and brings together the cultural heritage to which residents attribute identity value.
The idea arose when the Comune di Cossato acquired from a private owner, Mr Bertola, a collection of objects documenting the environments and activities of Cossato’s rural civilisation. With resolutions of the Giunta (23 November 1998) and of the Consiglio comunale (24 November 1998), the foundations of the ecomuseum were laid, together with a memorandum of understanding with the Province of Biella.
Unlike the traditional museum, the ecomuseum looks after and promotes technical and cultural heritage through a network of nodes: the museum cell is both the starting and the ending point of routes that connect it to the territory. The mosaic includes the Bertola collection, the ancient pieve, the farm and the baraggia, the typical heathland of the Biellese. The seat is the former school in the hamlet of Castellengo, which also houses the Ente di gestione del Parco della Baraggia.
