About the museum

The museum's origins go back to the 1952 national exhibition of the Alpine troops. On 15 September 1972, for the 50th anniversary of the Biella section of the Associazione Nazionale Alpini, it became a permanent museum under the name “Museo delle Truppe Alpine Mario Balocco – per non dimenticare” (Mario Balocco Museum of the Alpine Troops – lest we forget); after the move to its present site it took its current name.

The displays cover about 700 square metres on two levels, with steel panels recalling the Biella Prealps and a mezzanine designed like a military train, where around a thousand objects are shown. The modular route links the history of the Alpini with that of the Biella area, from the origins through the First and Second World Wars up to the Resistance.

The materials include the production of Alpini hats, the cannons of Adwa, the uniform of Costantino Crosa, who fell on the Piave in 1918, mementoes of Father Brevi, a prisoner in Russia, and of the chaplain Don Pietro Bricarello, photographs of the 191 Alpini awarded the Gold Medal, and a chapel with an image of Saint Maurice, patron saint of the Alpini.
