About the museum

The Ecomuseo del vino e della civiltà contadina in Verbicaro is set up in the rooms of the town’s restored former prison. It is conceived as a place of collective memory for the people of Verbicaro: it gathers, preserves and promotes the cultural and historical heritage left by their ancestors.

The rooms present objects once used in winemaking and rural life, arranged by theme and explained by panels. The first room covers the history of wine, the economic value of the vineyard and the transition from the palmento (winepress) to the catuvo; the second, the environment, the grape and the stipa, and religious rituals; the third, women and machines; the fourth, the cholera revolt, recalled in the old isolation cell used during the epidemic between the 19th and 20th centuries, the house and the “panacieddri”. A video shows footage of ancient local traditions, the museum and the municipality.

The ecomuseum aims to enhance the specific features of local heritage – knowledge, techniques, dialects, songs and food traditions – and, after this first stage, intends to turn every corner of the town into a place of collective memory.
