About the museum

The ecomuseum occupies the building of the latteria turnaria (rotating dairy cooperative) of Treby, a hamlet of Donnas, in the Lower Aosta Valley. The founding deed of the dairy is dated 25 July 1897; on 21 May 1902 the society bought the buildings of the Confraternity of the Holy Spirit. The dairy remained in operation until 1980, when the association was dissolved.

The building passed to the Comune di Donnas in 2000, was restored and opened as an ethnographic museum in 2003. Inside are the original equipment and furnishings for receiving milk and processing dairy products, as well as documents related to the activity of the dairy.

An adjoining room, entirely frescoed, commemorates the Confraternity of the Holy Spirit, attested from 1012 according to a fresco of the Last Supper. The confraternity looked after charity, fed the poor and gave shelter to those who had lost their home in a fire, and it continued its work for more than 150 years after its official suppression in 1776. The museum is run by a group of volunteer citizens.
