About the museum

The Ecomuseo della Resistenza “Il Codirosso” was founded in 2002 on the initiative of Riccardo Assom, in a mountain hut in the Borgata Grossa of Lemma, where a redstart (codirosso) nested, which gives the museum its name. The museum is located in an area where the activities of the Piedmontese partisans were especially intense. Assom collected interviews with protagonists of the Resistance in the Valle Varaita, their relatives and witnesses, and many people began to donate objects, relics and photographs that they had kept since the postwar years.

In September 2019 the entire collection was moved to the current seat, the historic Palazzo Garro in Rossana, a town awarded the Bronze Medal of Civil Valour. The museum has kept its original name and aims; the permanent display unfolds across three rooms on the ground floor of the palazzo.

Management is entrusted to the volunteer members of an association that looks after and promotes historic and artistic heritage. Since 2021 Il Codirosso has been part of the Rete Ecomusei Piemonte. The collection includes weapons, uniforms, photographs, documents, a library of almost a thousand volumes on the history of the Resistance, and hours of interviews and audio testimonies gathered in the valleys of the Cuneo area.
