About the museum
The Museo Civico Luigi Mallé in Dronero, opened in 1995, was created by the bequest of the art historian Luigi Mallé. Born in Turin in 1920 to a family originally from Dronero, Mallé was a curator and then, from 1965, director of the Musei Civici di Torino, where he promoted important exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. On his death in 1979 he left the family home with all its contents to the municipality, so that a museum in his name could be set up there.
The house, long a family summer retreat, keeps paintings, sculptures, fine Meissen ceramics, Art Nouveau vases by Gallé and Daum, historical photographs, Rococo prints, drawings and furnishings in the rooms where the family once lived. The renovation of the 1980s altered the original layout of the private residence, but the rooms still overlook a small courtyard enclosed by high walls.
The route presents the Mallé collection, with Flemish paintings, 18th-century pastel portraits, Italian landscape painters of the 19th century and works by masters of the 20th century, and also includes the Miche Berra and Margherita and Mario Crema collections. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and is part of the Musei Valli Maira e Grana network.
