Parco archeologico di Herakleia

Archaeological park on the Barone hill in Policoro, with the remains of the acropolis of the ancient Greek city of Herakleia.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

The park occupies the Barone hill, on the northern outskirts of Policoro, on the left bank of the River Agri. Here stood the acropolis of Herakleia, a Greek city founded in 434–433 BC by colonists from Taranto and Thurii. The oldest traces are attributed to the earlier Ionian colony of Siris, founded in the 7th century BC and destroyed by a coalition led by Sibari.

After the Second Punic War the city went into crisis, and in the Roman period it remained a small centre. In the area below, the Vallone del Varratizzo, stood the agora and the temples dedicated to Dionysus and Demeter, which are also included in the park.

The finds from the excavations are kept in the nearby Museo archeologico nazionale della Siritide, where the single ticket office is located; a combined ticket is available for the park and the museum.
