About the museum
The Fondazione Massimo e Sonia Cirulli promotes Italian visual culture of the 20th century, from the birth of modernity to the years of the economic boom (1900–1970). The collections range from figurative art to design drawing and architecture, from graphic design to photography.
The seat, in San Lazzaro di Savena, is a building designed in 1960 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Dino Gavina. It is inspired by Emilian barns and rural farmhouses and is linked to the history of Italian design.
The programme is based on the concept of the “Archivio Animato” (animated archive), devised by Jeffrey Schnapp, which combines archive and exhibition space: the collection is presented through exhibitions, events and publications, while guided visits, workshops and activities on Italian creativity are offered to schools and companies.
