About the museum
The museum opened on 30 March 2019 in the Palazzo della Cultura in Ozzano dell’Emilia. It inherits the content and contacts of the exhibition “Scoprire Claterna. I primi scavi archeologici nella città romana” (Discovering Claterna: the first archaeological excavations in the Roman city), set up in the same spaces in 2006 by the municipality together with the Soprintendenza and various associations. The finds on display are state property and have been on deposit at the museum since 2019, under the management of the competent Soprintendenza.
The display combines ancient objects, reconstruction drawings, photographs and texts in a narrative that follows the history of Claterna, a Roman city on the Via Emilia: its origins, urban form, public and private spaces, daily life, abandonment and rediscovery at the end of the 19th century.
The museum is designed as a place of discovery and meeting for the community and offers guided tours, activities for schools and initiatives about the nearby archaeological site, such as the “Domeniche al museo” (Museum Sundays).
