About the museum
The zoological museum of ISPRA is located at the institute's site in Ozzano dell'Emilia and holds around 15,000 stuffed specimens of mammals and birds, kept in wooden cabinets spread across three large rooms. The collection has historical, artistic and scientific value.
It was not founded as a museum for display but as a store for conservation and research: for this reason there are few display cases and panels, while closed cabinets, chests of drawers and shelves predominate. It is regarded as an archive of Italian biodiversity and is recognised for the purposes of the CITES Convention.
The large series of specimens make it possible to study variations in plumage and fur, body measurements and even small fragments of historic DNA. Among the best-known pieces are skins of Apennine wolves, buzzards, kestrels, barn owls and Sardinian bearded vultures. Today the specimens come mainly from animals recovered after road accidents, collisions with glass, accidental captures, poaching and illegal keeping. A taxidermy workshop linked to the museum prepares new specimens.
