About the museum
The Museo Memoriale della Libertà reconstructs the last months of the Second World War along the Gothic Line and in Bologna, with a narrative route conceived as a “time machine”. Its aim is to tell the story of the Allies' successful attempt to break through the German defensive line and liberate northern Italy.
The route unfolds through reconstructed scenes: the round-up of civilians in an Apennine village by the Organizzazione Todt; the precarious life of the population during the harsh winter of 1944 and the Anglo-American bombings; the battle of Porta Lame, with the partisan uprising; and finally the last clash of the Allied offensive, the climb of the Costone Riva, which opened the way to the capture of Monte Belvedere.
Outside is a vehicle park which the museum describes as one of the most important in Europe, with tanks such as a Sherman, troop carriers, lorries, jeeps and amphibious vehicles, as well as a historic train with a locomotive from 1910, a freight wagon used for deportations, housing an exhibition on the extermination camps, and two carriages of the Bologna–Imola railway dating from 1906 and 1925.
