About the museum
The Fortezza Pisana stands in the upper part of Marciana, on the island of Elba, and is the village's main historic monument. The Republic of Pisa built it in the 12th century as a defensive stronghold: during raids by pirates and Saracens, and in other wars, the inhabitants took refuge there.
The square layout dates from the 12th century, while in the 15th century four bastions with arrowhead-shaped masonry were added. A walkway crosses the fortress from the south-west bastion to the north-west one, the highest point, and offers views over Marciana Marina, the Enfola peninsula, Portoferraio, Piombino and Monte Capanne.
In the south bastion there is a large ceramic dolium, used to store and ferment wine, found in the 1970s during excavations of the Etruscan fortress of Monte Castello di Procchio. In summer the courtyard hosts a stage for events and performances. The fortress is part of the Circuito culturale di Marciana, together with the Museo civico archeologico, the Museo didattico numismatico and the Casa del Parco.
