About the museum
The museum was founded in 1967 as a simple collection of finds from the protohistoric settlements of Monte Capanne, and it was the first museum institution on the island of Elba. It is housed in some rooms of the old Palazzo Pretorio in Marciana. In 1971 a ministerial decree classified it as a “museo minore” (minor museum), and in 2002 it was completely renovated to a design by the architect Maurizio Giachetti.
Over time the collections were enriched with Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age materials, Etruscan finds from the hilltop fortress of Monte Castello, Roman, medieval and 18th-century materials, and the complex of the burial cave of San Giuseppe at Rio nell’Elba.
The route unfolds across four rooms, from prehistory to the medieval age, and ends with the section on underwater archaeology, devoted to the wrecks of Procchio, Chiessi and Sant’Andrea and to an 18th-century cargo ship: wine, oil and garum amphorae, glass goblets, shipboard crockery and an ivory statuette.
