About the museum
The Museo d’Arte Contemporanea (M.A.C.C.) of Caltagirone was founded in 1996, after the donation of works by the local artist Gianni Ballarò by his wife. It is housed in the former Ospedale delle Donne, in its present location since 1799, near the ancient church of San Giorgio; the entrance is on Via Luigi Sturzo.
The collection gathers contemporary art acquired on the occasion of the Rassegne Nazionali della Ceramica organised by the municipality since 1980, as well as purchases and donations, with works by artists such as Franco Cannilla, Dino Caruso, Andrea Parini, Francesco Cusumano, Luigi Mainolfi, Luigi Ontani, Giulio Turcato and Mario Ceroli. The museum also has a specialised video library, a documentary and photographic archive and a library.
