About the museum
The museum occupies part of the former Capuchin convent of Sortino and is presented as a unique ethnoanthropological museum in the Mediterranean. It documents the traditional beekeeping of the Monti Iblei (Hyblaean Mountains), where the fascitrari, the honey producers, have passed on the trade for generations; Sortino is known for its Sagra del miele (honey festival).
The collection comprises the working tools for the artisanal production, processing and storage of honey, wax and royal jelly. Guided visits show hives made of ferula wood on workbenches, the basket and press for separating the honeycombs, the cauldron for washing wax in boiling water, and the typical cart used for the arduous transhumance. The museum is open to students, families, researchers and visitors.
