About the museum

The Museo regionale della ceramica di Caltagirone, active since 1965 and run by the Parco archeologico e paesaggistico di Catania e della Valle dell’Aci, has its historic seat in the city’s public garden. Since March 2025 that venue has been closed as unsafe for use, and the permanent new home is planned in the former convent of Sant’Agostino, where restoration work is under way with no certain completion date.

Thanks to a memorandum of understanding between the Sicilian Region and the municipality of Caltagirone, which owns the building, part of the collection is temporarily housed in Palazzo Libertini di San Marco, in the historic centre. The exhibition “Divo Jacobo Majori Apostolo dicatum” has been on show since 7 August 2025, the first display outside the historic seat; since 22 December 2025 the exhibition “Invito a Palazzo” (Invitation to the Palace) occupies six rooms on the piano nobile (main floor).

The overall collection numbers more than 2,500 items, from Sicilian prehistory to the early 20th century; in the palace rooms a selection of about two hundred pieces is presented, telling the long ceramic tradition of Caltagirone through Greek ceramics and local productions.

Highlights

  • Selection of about 200 masterpieces from the ceramics collection
  • Six rooms on the piano nobile of Palazzo Libertini di San Marco
  • Ceramics from Sicilian prehistory to the early 20th century
