About the museum
The Antiquarium is laid out in the underground spaces of the Auditorium of the Santa Margherita complex, owned by the Fondazione di Piacenza e Vigevano. It opened in 2010 after the fitting-out works and is open to visitors through educational panels and a selection of finds documenting the use of the site from the 2nd century BC to the 18th century.
The route leads to the crypt, which dates from the second half of the 10th century to the beginning of the 11th. It shows features typical of early medieval crypts alongside others that are already Romanesque. Three-dimensional graphic reconstructions help visitors imagine the original Romanesque church.
The display also includes the remains of a Roman house, dating from the late 1st century BC to the end of the 2nd century AD, with brick walls, cocciopesto floors, a black-and-white mosaic and painted plaster. In front of the apses are tombs from Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, while through a crystal window in the floor of the Auditorium the remains of a post-Roman kiln can be seen.
A large display of amphorae, about sixty of which have been recovered, documents the import of oil and wine to Piacenza between the late 2nd and the mid-1st century BC. The visit is completed by household objects and late medieval and modern ceramics.
